Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right Havanese puppy for my family and lifestyle?

Choosing the right Havanese puppy for your family and lifestyle requires careful consideration of several factors. Firstly, it's important to identify the traits you're looking for in a dog, such as activity level, temperament, and grooming needs. This will help you narrow down your options and select a puppy that matches your lifestyle. Secondly, it's recommended to meet the puppies in person and observe their behavior and temperament to ensure they're a good fit for your family. Additionally, you should ask the breeder about the puppy's health history, vaccinations, and socialization, as well as their breeding practices. A reputable breeder will be transparent and willing to answer any questions you may have. Ultimately, choosing the right Havanese puppy requires careful research, communication with the breeder, and a deep understanding of your own family's needs and lifestyle. Keep in mind that a breeder who has 20-30 females is likely a puppy mill, no matter what their website or add says, so ask the right questions.

What is the average lifespan of a Havanese dog?

The average lifespan of a Havanese dog is between 14 to 16 years. However, some Havanese dogs have been known to live even longer with proper care and a healthy lifestyle. It's important to note that genetics, diet, exercise, and overall health can all play a role in determining a dog's lifespan. As with any pet, regular veterinary check-ups and proper care can help ensure your Havanese lives a long and healthy life.

Are Havanese dogs good with children and other pets?

Yes, Havanese dogs are known for being good with children and other pets. They are social and affectionate dogs that enjoy being around people and other animals. However, as with any breed, it's important to supervise interactions between children and dogs to ensure that both are safe and comfortable. Early socialization and training can also help Havanese puppies learn how to behave appropriately around other pets and children.

How often do Havanese dogs need to be groomed?

Havanese dogs have a long, silky coat that requires regular grooming to prevent matting and tangling. Generally, they need to be brushed every day or every other day to maintain their coat's health and appearance. They also require regular baths, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and teeth brushing. Some owners prefer to take their Havanese to a professional groomer every 4-6 weeks to maintain their coat's length and style. It's important to establish a grooming routine early on in your Havanese's life to ensure they are comfortable with the process.

What kind of exercise do Havanese dogs require?

Havanese dogs are a relatively active breed, but they don't require a lot of exercise. A daily walk and some playtime in a fenced yard or indoor space is usually enough to keep them happy and healthy. They also enjoy mental stimulation, so puzzle toys and games can be a great way to give them some additional exercise. It's important not to over-exercise Havanese dogs, as they are prone to heat exhaustion and other heat-related health issues.

Do Havanese dogs have any known health issues?

Yes, like all dog breeds, Havanese dogs have some known health issues that can affect them. Some of the most common health issues in Havanese include luxating patella (dislocating kneecap), hip dysplasia, deafness, cataracts, and heart conditions. However, these health issues can be minimized or prevented through proper breeding practices, regular health checkups, and a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and exercise. As a responsible breeder, we ensure that our Havanese puppies come from healthy parents with no known genetic health issues.

Can Havanese dogs live in an apartment or do they need a house with a yard?

Havanese dogs are adaptable and can live in an apartment as long as they get enough exercise and mental stimulation. However, they also enjoy playing outside and having access to a yard or green space to explore. It is important to remember that all dogs need daily exercise and attention, regardless of the size of their living space.

How often should I take my Havanese dog to the vet for check-ups and vaccinations?

As a responsible pet owner, you should take your Havanese dog to the vet for regular check-ups and vaccinations. Typically, puppies require more frequent visits than adult dogs. In general, it is recommended to take your Havanese puppy to the vet every 3-4 weeks until they are about 16 weeks old, then once every 6 months for routine check-ups and vaccinations. Adult Havanese dogs should visit the vet at least once a year for check-ups and vaccinations, but may require more frequent visits depending on their age and any health issues they may have. Your vet can provide specific recommendations based on your Havanese's individual needs.

What is the process for purchasing a Havanese puppy from your breeding program?

Thank you for your interest in our Havanese breeding program. Our puppies are sold for $3,500 and require a non-refundable deposit of $525 to reserve your puppy. The deposit will be applied to the total cost of your puppy. We also require each person interested in purchasing a puppy to fill out a puppy adoption application. This is to ensure that our puppies are going to a loving and suitable home that matches their individual needs. Once the litter is born, we will contact you to schedule a visit and choose your puppy on a first come, first serve basis. We also provide ongoing support and training resources for our new puppy owners. Please feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions.

Do you offer a health guarantee?

Havanese Loves guarantees that the puppy is in good health at the time of sale and has been vaccinated and dewormed according to its age. The puppy has been examined by a licensed veterinarian and found to be free of any congenital or hereditary disorders that would adversely affect its quality of life. In the event that the puppy is diagnosed with a genetic or hereditary disorder within one year from the date of purchase, the buyer must provide written documentation from two licensed veterinarians indicating the disorder. The buyer may choose to return the puppy for a full refund, or receive a replacement puppy of equal value, upon availability. This guarantee is void if the puppy is not examined by a licensed veterinarian within 72 hours of purchase or if the puppy has been subjected to neglect or abuse. The buyer assumes all responsibility for the puppy's health after taking possession of the puppy, including but not limited to vaccinations, deworming, and regular veterinary care.

How much will my puppy weigh?

Coco and Luna are both 15 pounds, while Teddy is 14 pounds. None of them are overweight but in a very good healthy weight range with no excess body fat. They get along great with our kids and another 40 pound dog as they are not too dainty to play. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC) breed standard for Havanese, the ideal weight range for the breed is between 7 and 13 pounds. However, a Havanese that weighs 14 or 15 pounds can still be within a healthy weight range and not necessarily considered overweight, as long as its overall body condition is good and it doesn't have excess body fat. It's important for breeders and owners to monitor their dog's weight and body condition regularly to ensure they stay within a healthy range.
